MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE
The night of 9/11/01
“Flamenco Festival” The Scottish Rite Temple, Santa Fe, NM
The events of the morning of September 11, 2001 shook America, and obviously touched the small community of Santa Fe, NM. However, the Scottish Rite Temple in Santa Fe, held to their original concert agenda scheduled that night. Although the show was to begin at 6pm, it had been delayed by the President’s “Address to the Nation” to which the concert performers and audience listened intently via a portable radio placed on the stage. After a few moments of somber silence and wiping away tears, the performers began to play a wonderful and passionate performance to raise the audience’s spirits and to honor the perseverance of Flamenco traditions even in the face of grief. Mito states, “It was an odd combination; to be elated with the emotion of our performance coupled with the events of that day.”
The night of 9/15/01
“Cultural Concert Series” College of Beeville (Cultural Ctr. for the Arts), Beeville, TX
Days after the 9/11 tragedy, Mito had time to reflect about the recent events and, prior to the scheduled performance, decided to sing the national anthem accapella. Almost overwhelmed with sadness, Mito faltered through the last couple lines. When he did finish, the audience sat quietly, many facing the ground and silently weeping. A few seconds later, one person started clapping and, within seconds, the audience broke out in a roar of cheers and yells to appreciate Mito’s gesture of compassion and connection. Mito recalls the performance: “I did not know whether we could continue. I took a bow, and looked around realizing that there existed this incredible connection between us performers; I sat down to compose myself and began the Flamenco. I think that was one of the best performances any of us has ever had.”
